The Sine Painter Selected For RBMA's Class Of 2015

Jul 16, 12:29pm

Bangalore-based deep electronic musician Jayanth Ramachandra, a.k.a. The Sine Painter, was recently selected by the Red Bull Music Academy to attend their Class of 2015 in Paris.

Bangalore-based deep electronic musician Jayanth Ramachandra, a.k.a. The Sine Painter, was recently selected to be a part of the group of 61 musicians from around the globe invited by the Red Bull Music Academy, to attend their Class of 2015 in Paris. “It's a dream come true for me.” Jayanth told us, “I've been following RBMA for sometime, and am a big fan of a lot of stuff they put out. From RBMA Radio, to their lecture videos, to their Various Assets series of compilations they release every year; their content is some of the best that you can find. It's hard to believe I'm going to be part of it this year. I can't wait to experience, first hand, what the music scene is like in Paris, work with the other participants, get to know what the music scenes are like in the countries they come from, and expand my own understanding of music in the process.”

The Sine Painter’s music includes influences ranging from ambient experimental music to German techno to Chicago house; fusing glitch sounds and samples with lush grooves creating a sort of circuit-based electronic dreamscape of sound. “Usually between 100 and 120 bpm, usually set to a four to the floor beat, usually has a bunch of layers to it, usually on the longer side, sometimes rhythmically intensive, sometimes melodically intensive, sometimes both, sometimes it's deep and introspective and sometimes it's fun;” is how Jayanth likes to describe his music.

With this being the second attempt at applying to RBMA, Jayanth spent a great deal of time and effort into acclimatizing himself to the Parisian culture; delving himself face-first into French cinema, music, even food. “I was prepared (sort of) for the monstrosity that was the application form.” Jayanth told us, “It's this twenty page questionnaire that took me like two or three weeks to complete. Although, the answers to the questions are not that long, a few of them require you to introspect a lot, and a few of them require you to spend a good amount of time understanding the culture of the host city if you aren't already very familiar with it.”

While Jayanth prepares himself for the journey to Paris, there are a few projects coming from The Sine Painter’s end that are already in the pipeline. An EP release with Bangalore-based producer Oceantied - for the duo's artist collective Hybrid Cycle - and Sri Lanka-based beatboxer Julius Mitchell, are some of the upcoming projects.

Emerging Artists of 2013

It’s been a good year for young bands, with crowds far more receptive to new artists – young and old alike – and promoters also taking punts on these new bands. Plus, with the internet and Bandcamp and Soundcloud allowing anyone with an internet connection to upload new music, the opportunities for musicians to be heard, reach out, and get attention have naturally increased. So yeah, it’s not all gloomy, even if the weather here in Delhi really is.
