Kolkata’s five-piece Gingerfeet have released their debut album, titled High and Above: The First Wave. The nine songs on the record follow a fundamentally funk aesthetic interspersed with alt-rock and rock ‘n’ roll leanings – with slap grooves and drum ‘n’ bass interplay complemented by an edgy vocal delivery and a strong melodic vibe. And tons of guitar solos. The album has been produced by Rhitabrata Kar at RBK Studio with Anirban Banerjee as sound engineer.

The band got together late last year, making their debut at the Hornbill National Rock Competition, part of the annual Hornbill festival held in Nagaland. They played to thousands of adoring fans, winning the competition and earning a neat five lakhs too. Next, they headed into the studio to write and record High and Above: The First Wave, which released in late September this year – with a launch gig at Someplace Else in Kolkata – in addition to a steady output of live gigs through the year. They’ve been making waves within the indie circuit, garnering a decent enough name for themselves in a very short span of time on the back of their powerful live sets as well as the high-energy music that defines the narrative of the album.
