Sitar player Anoushka Shankar made an appearance in 2012 at the Oz Fest (not Ozzy’s Ozz fest, mind you; there’s no metal here) on October 16 at the Purana Qila in New Delhi, along with Aboriginal Australian singer Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, known for his intense vocal performance and a very innovative approach to playing the guitar, and Mark Atkins, who added some eclectic energy into the mix with his didgeridoo, the very fascinating drone instrument from Australia.
The event kick started the Oz Fest, held in India from October 2012 till January ’13, showcasing contemporary Australian culture. Multi-instrumentalist Gurrumul, who performed at the concert, was born blind, and is acclaimed for his iconic vocal delivery in the Yolngu language, and it was an interesting experiment to see his ingenuity accentuated by Atkins and Anoushka Shankar’s sublime wizardry on the sitar.
Entry: Open to all, pre-register for the event via http://www.ozfestindia.com/
