It’s that time of the year for India’s alternative scene to get repped at two of UK’s landmark festivals. Delhi gypsy/psychedelic rock band Peter Cat Recording Co., their frontman Suryakant Sawhney’s electronica project Lifafa, audio-visual DJ duo blot! and Bengaluru producer Rahul Giri aka _RHL head to London and Brighton next month for sets at the Great Escape Festival (May 19) and the Alchemy Festival (May 29).
While the likes of electro rock band Sky Rabbit and alternative punk band BLEK have previously travelled to the Great Escape Festival previously, this year’s association comes courtesy of Delhi-based webzine/events/artist management company Wild City. All four artists are part of the Indian Showcase at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton as well as the Wild City showcase at Alchemy, held at London’s Southbank Centre. In 2015, Wild City toured the UK with electronica artists Sulk Station, Nicholson and Curtain Blue.
Giri said in a statement, “Both the Sulk Station shows in the UK last year were well received but my solo project, _RHL, is quite different and open ended with influences from hip hop, grime, footwork. I will be showcasing some stuff that I have put out already, and some material from my upcoming release.”
Sawhney adds, “This is the first time for us in the UK, and should be an exciting experience for the band. It would be really interesting to see how the music goes down since this will be the only other English-speaking country, apart from India, that we would have performed in.”
