Delhi vocalist Aneesha Dass has lived in the world of covers with her releases until now, a pretty low-key and nocturnal cover of Disclosure’s ‘Latch’ among others. ‘Uncertainty’, a single with her and producers Kenzani and Techpanda, is her first foray into original composition, and the stellar production compliments her vocal combination of jittery neo-soul and the more relaxed sounds of early-century trip-hop.
Aneesha’s vocals do have the warbly and runny-yolk quality of some modern neo-soul; that intangible thing that makes that kind of delivery sound like a kid that just can’t sit still. But she reins in it quite a bit instead of being completely all over the place, which prevents it from being insufferable. It also gives it a comfortable pocket while retaining a quiet power that’s the strength of the song. It is backed by some really savvy production, with the warm keys and some relaxed drum sounds. Of course, Kenzani and Techpanda are very aware that the unsung hero of trip-hop and other unnecessary labels is actually the bass, so it’s a good thing that the thing that actually drives ‘Uncertainty’ is its cracking bassline. There’s nothing to find below the surface or any subliminal business here; the song is just a smooth experience, and perhaps the only thing preventing it from being pretentious is that it isn’t tryharding to be something overly deep.
