A 14-year-old kid who had a huge fascination for drumming started his journey by “air-drumming” and visualising all the chords as he calls it, until he got his first drum set 4 years later when he was 18. Here’ a story about the multifaceted Mumbai based self-taught Drummer/Composer/Vocalist/Producer/Lyricist, for over 3 decades, Sanjay Maroo.

“I was a Marwari boy from south Bombay and being a musician that time was not the ideal thing to do”
- Sanjay Maroo

Maroo’s career has been quite a roller coaster starting with renowned rock bands of the 80’s music scene like Les Boys and Rock Machine which later became the highly acclaimed Indus Creed, being the crux of the rock scene of those times. “I was a Marwari boy from south Bombay and being a musician that time was not the ideal thing to do, but my father always encouraged me to follow what I wanted. I travelled to many places outside the country from Malaysia to Tokyo as a Jazz Drummer and the many experiences from it made me who I am”, adds Maroo who was part of the 25th Tokyo Jazz Festival, Malaysian Jazz festival and The Jazz club, Hong Kong. He has also worked with late Dave Valentin, Giovanni Hidalgo, Ernie Watts and Eric Marienthal.

Maroo has 7 albums to his credit and the journey according to him, hasn’t been a cake-walk. “A lot of people doubted my choice of being a drummer but that made me more determined to be one’, says Maroo. His last 8- tracker album “Headspaces” released in 2016 was one of the Top Charts on iTunes which took 2 entire years to complete. It talked about the urban point of life, faith and the amount of emotional rollercoaster he has been through from happiness to sadness along with finding the depth of existence and questioning afterlife.

After the success of the album, Maroo has released one of his most significant single called “Altered Reality”. This single talks about the true meaning of freedom in today’s most complicated world. Maroo adds, “This song is about my angst and realising all that is shown around is not always the entire truth. It is about not abusing the freedom we get and not taking it entirely for granted.” On that note, he believes that being an artist there is a contribution that should be made to the community, to touch people lives and trusting in his cosmos.

Sanjay being a businessman-musician and a family man loves the act of juggling everything with supreme ease and is thrilled to make more music in the upcoming months.
