For its 48th edition, legendary guitarist Guthrie Govan will perform at the iconic BITS Pilani annual event.
Few college festivals continue to make into established musicians' memories, years after their performances. BITS Pilani's Oasis finds itself in almost every performer's list. In fact, Parikrama's Subir Malik cited 'no bigger platform than that' for band quitting the college competition circuit after their triumph at Pilani's rock competition in 1993. "There was nothing bigger to win than that," said Malik in a Rolling Stone India listicle.
The campus now prepares as it will lay its red carpet for one of the most sought-out guitarists in the world - Guthrie Govan. Govan is currently touring India with drummer Gino Banks and bassist Mohini Dey, and the tour that began in Mumbai will move to Hyderabad and Kanpur before making a pit-stop in Pilani on 28 October. By now, Govan has familiarised himself with the Indian audience and the support thanks to his earlier visits. But this tour involves gigs in college campuses, a phenomenon that has played a vital role in growth and fame for most rock bands across the globe.
Called 'The Far Out Fest', the 2018 edition will also feature Delhi's instrumental/post-rock act Ioish. The trio, on the verge of its latest EP release, will perform right after the inauguration ceremony on 27th night. Continuing with the tradition of multi-genre line-up across four days, the festival will also host Bollywood's most successful composer trio - Shankar Ehsaan Loy. In its four-plus decades of hosting biggies of Bollywood, the Pilani cultural festival evolved with time on one hand while maintaining the popular sentiment of the crowd across ages and curated the line-up accordingly.
On the EDM front, after having Candice Redding on the stage last year, the college has upped its bar once again with Van Moon and Wolf Pack in the musical mix this year.
Bits Pilani Oasis begins on 27 October.
