Bombay modern thrash/groove metal band Providence released the first track, ‘Dante’, off of their upcoming debut full length album, Embodiment on March 30, on SoundCloud. The ten tracks on the anticipated release are currently being architectured by the band in their jam rooms; we enquired from guitarist Charan Singh Pathania about the band’s current activities, who told us, “Right now we are in the writing phase which we are almost done with, so half the battle has been won in that sense.” Embodiment promises to flaunt the intellect of a concept album, with each track on the album commemorating the band members’ favourite video game characters. Yes, you read that right. ‘Dante’ happens to be the namesake of the primary protagonist from the Devil May Cry game series and was recorded with Nikhil Singh of prog-djent act Shavasva, before he moved to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music. “A majority of the band members are gamers,” Charan said. “We like to enjoy the finer things in life. So that’s what the album is about; we’re like, ‘Fuck it.’ I mean, we love these characters so much, I’m sure that there are metalheads out there who would relate to these games and relate what we’re talking about, hence the name Embodiment.” The music is a blend of groove and thrash metal steering the sound towards modern thrash.

The band released their debut EP, Vanguard, back in 2011, which was recorded with Keshav Dhar of Skyharbor, and hopes to keep it that way for the upcoming album too. “When things are going into the studio,” Charan said, “it really depends on what inspires you; maybe you want to do something different or maybe you want to stick to something you are comfortable with. So, if we decide on sticking with what we are comfortable with, we would go for Keshav any day, because he’s brilliant.”

Best Indian Metal Albums - 2013

Though 2013 abounded in gigs, it was a pretty low-key year for Indian metal bands as far as album releases went. Quite a few promised albums never dropped for various reasons, the ones that did oscillated between ho-hum and downright unlistenable, and much of the year was given to bitching and moaning about the state of the scene. It wasn’t all that bleak, however; there were a few notable releases that made the top lists this year.
