Frame/Frame Release New EP

Feb 12, 02:45pm

Delhi-based electronica artists Nikhil Kaul, a.k.a. Frame/Frame, released his sophomore EP, Pariah, this week. The EP features Nikhil in collaboration with percussionist Sahil Mehndiratta, experimenting with a little more upbeat and dancier sound.

Delhi-based electronica artist Nikhil Kaul, a.k.a. Frame/Frame, released his latest EP, Pariah, this week. The four track EP features Nikhil delving into his version of dance music, in collaboration with Delhi-based percussionist and electronica musician Sahil Mehndiratta, better known as Inspector Maal. “The past one year that I had been working with Sahil,” Nikhil told us, “Both of us wanted to make something that we could translate live in the most convincing manner we felt. In the process, we made about an hour and a half worth of music, and we started to kind of veer toward dancier kind of grooves; which was what both of us wanted to do. Essentially, it started out as that, but then we really got into the sound because we were hell-bent on it not sounding like EDM, or techno, or house music. Basically this us man, this is our version of dance music.”

Recorded, produced, and mixed in collaboration with Sahil, Pariah, witnesses Nikhil experimenting with nuances and open spaces within the music; recording live drums and such. “The idea was to take it quite far away from your regular forms of dance music,” Nikhil told us, “Which is where that sound kind of came in; like that gentle acoustic snare and open sound. So, the point was to let it breathe and have dynamics. I remember Sahil fooling around with the I-Pad at times, and doing extremely non-drummer things; he’s definitely more than just a drummer, hes a solid musician.”

Nikhil plans on releasing a lot more music this year, having figured out certain avenues within the sounds that he would like to experiment with. He told us, “I see myself operate in three distinct territories: one is this kind of dancier sound - the sound of Pariah; one is the more sound-oriented work like in Swimmers; and then there is the more songwriting kind of stuff that I did with ‘Hard Boiled Wonderland’, and ‘Pastels’. I kind of have these three spaces that I want to work on, and ideally want to have releases with each sound.  So, I don't know, maybe I'll release two or three EPs this year, with a fuck-ton of collaborations.”
