The Midival Punditz Release Their 4th Album

May 07, 04:44pm

Delhi-based Indian electronica duo The Midival Punditz recently released their fourth studio album, Light, with a host of interesting artist collaborations. We spoke to one half Tapan Raj about the new album.

Delhi-based Indian electronica duo The Midival Punditz released their fourth studio album, Light, experimenting with their first performance-based concept for an album. “Light, has been conceptualised to be presented live - with a full band, in its entirety - with all songs being performed in the same flow as in the studio version.” Tapan Raj told us, “The album has strong roots in various styles of Indian folk music and also our signature style of electronica.”

The album was recorded at the duo’s studios in Delhi, showcasing various styles such as Carnatic, Rajasthani and UP, and collaborations with artists like Kutle Khan, Pandit Ajay Prasanna, Baiju Dharmajan, and more. “We have an idea of which artist to collaborate with while we are in the process of writing a track." Tapan told us, "Most of these collaborators are people we have worked with in the past or have seen them performing with their own band or some other situation like that. There is no dearth of awesome talent that we can tap into for working with us, but we usually rely heavily on not just the talent of the artist but also their vibe with us. This plays an equal if not more important part for both of us. If there is no synergy in the studio or a mutual respect for each other’s work, then no matter how talented the collaborator is, some awful results are going to come out.”

“Since the album was conceived as a live show,” Tapan told us, “The visual element in this case holds great importance for us. We had always imagined presenting the new record to the audience in an audio-visual manner. Each song comes with its own video, which is designed by Delhi-based Santana Issar with help from album cover artist Naasha Mehta. They created custom visuals for most of the tracks on the album and these are music videos that we project on a screen behind the stage while we perform the tracks live. The videos are synched with our music and that creates a more powerful audio-visual experience for the audience.”

The duo have recently finished a four-city tour of the album preview including Pune, Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad, and will be touring the US soon.
