The Ska Vengers To Release New Album

Jun 24, 03:48pm

Delhi-based ska/dub/jazz band The Ska Vengers have announced the release of their first track and music video for 'Frank Brazil', off of their upcoming album. We spoke to the members about the upcoming release.

Delhi-based ska/dub/jazz band The Ska Vengers recently announced the release of the first track and music video – ‘Frank Brazil’ – off of the band’s upcoming untitled album. The track and music video will be released on July 31 as an ode to the Indian revolutionary Udham Singh. “For the music video for ‘Frank Brazil’ we teamed up with Kunal Sen and Tisha Deb Pillai,” Taru Dalmia a.k.a. Delhi Sultanate told us. “Who also did the Modi video for us. This time they had a lot more time on their hands as compared to the Modi video, which they had to make in five days. For this video they had ample time to work on. The video is based on Udham Singh’s story because he’s a very interesting character to talk about. The song’s called ‘Fank Brazil’ because it happens to be a pseudonym that he used while he travelled. So, we teamed up with them, and I think they’re really gifted animators. It releases on July 31, also the day that Udham Singh was executed.”

The album is being recorded at Katharas Studios in Delhi; “A lot of songs are finished but there are still vocals left to record,” Taru told us, “And, then the mixing and mastering. It’s hard to say when it will release because that process takes longer than one would like it to.” While work on the album continues, the band is also speculating on whether the album release this time should be backed by a label or not. “It’s quite a diverse range of styles,” percussionist and organ player Stefan Kaye told us, “But, I like to think that it still sounds like us. Not too desperate [laughing]. But, I’m sure everyone will have their favorites on the list. I don’t know if everyone will like every song on the album, but everyone will like one song at least.”

“It’s been about two or three years since we realeased the last album,” Taru told us, “And, we feel like we have all improved as musicians. I feel I’ve improved as a songwriter, and also been more experienced with the recording process, this being the second album. The music on the new album, I would say, is richer in a sense. This time around, I think, we were a bit more successful in transmitting that live music energy into the recording. Lyrically, I would say that I’ve improved a little bit, and the lyrics this time around are a little better than the previous album. It’s a bit more specific and topical. Musically, there are a few straight forward ska and rocksteady tracks, but there are some songs that go into the afrobeat direction. So, there is a lot of exploring we’ve done on this record.”
